BREAKING: Popular manga, Spy X Family is getting an anime in 2022!

Jun 22, 2021 09:24 PM

Actress Mariko Honda reportedly reveals that a Spy X Family anime series, which has yet to be officially announced, is coming in 2022.

A now deleted line from an interview seems to confirm that Spy X Family may be getting an anime adaptation.

According to Shonen Jump News – Unofficial, voice actor Mariko Honda casually mentioned the as-yet-unannounced Spy X Family anime, saying that she “looks forward to the animated adaptation of the popular Spy X Family series next year.” The line has since been deleted from the interview without explanation, so it is currently unknown if Honda was merely misquoted, or if the voice actor accidentally mentioned a project that was not supposed to be announced publicly yet. Mariko Honda has been a professional voice actor since 2008, and has starred in many anime and video games, including NichijouAtelier Eschy & Logy and Ace Attorney.

Spy X Family tells the story of Loid Forger, codename “Twilight,” the world’s greatest spy who has to put together a fake family in order to complete a mission. While he makes every effort to pass off the idea that his new family is perfectly average, his wife is actually a deadly assassin, his daughter is a psychic mind-reader, and his dog is a government experiment that can see the future. In addition to struggling with appearing “normal,” the family must also deal with rival spies and assassins running counter-operations that threaten to blow their cover. While they initially come together simply to complete a mission, their act eventually develops into a genuine familial bond, and the group must come to terms with the realization that accomplishing their goal will mean the end of the mission and the dissolution of their new family.

Created by Tatsuya Endo, Spy X Family has become one of the most popular manga series to emerge out of Shonen Jump+, the online-only spinoff of Shueisha’s popular manga magazine. Since its original publication in 2019, the manga has received widespread critical acclaim, been the recipient of multiple awards in Japan and has sold over 11 million copies. The series was also recently nominated for an Eisner Award. Despite initially only being available on Shonen Jump+, the online manga has surpassed the popularity of many of the titles serialized in the main Shonen Jump magazine, so while Mariko Honda’s comments about a Spy X Family show have yet to be officially confirmed, it seems like an anime adaptation is inevitable.

VIZ Media has licensed the Spy X Family manga for distribution in North America. The manga can be read on VIZ’s official website, and the company also began releasing collected volumes of the series in print in 2020.
